A wind turbine for the Governor of the Bank of England

wooden model on an E-111 wind turbine presented to Mark Carney by Triodos Bank UK

When Mark Carney stepped down as governor of the Bank of England in 2020 I was approached by Triodos bank UK to make a leaving gift that they would present to him.

In line with the company’s ethical approach to banking all of the components were made from reclaimed or otherwise sustainably sourced timber. The subject also reflected this philosophy: an Enercon E-115 wind turbine used to generate electricity.

This was a little unusual for me as it was principally a woodturning project, rather than a carving one (although I have done quite a few projects involving turning and do enjoy working on the lathe). The blades actually rotate: it took quite a few attempts to get the mechanism to function well!

The inscription on the base was added afterwards by an employee of the bank.
